I had Friday off. I woke up, went to the coffee shop across the street and then rushed to the book store to pick up a copy of the San Francisco Business Times as a reporter had an interview with our CEO Alex on the previous Wednesday for a story she was working on plus size clothing and I was excited to see what she ran.

Dreaming of cashing in on clothes?

The rest of Friday was spent running long overdue errands including my all time favorites, laundry and cleaning the house, paying bills, and dropping clothes off at Crossroads, a second hand clothing store in San Francisco. It is amazing how little money they pay you back for something you bought for a small fortune a few years ago. I guess my friend meatpilljunkie is right.

Clothes are like cars; the minute you leave the lot, they start depreciating, at least in resale value, unless of course, they are a fabulous brand name and you are patient to wait it out for about 20 years. Then, they are considered vintage, and you could possibly make some decent money off of them. But knowing myself, I probably would choose to keep and show them off myself.

Anyway, I almost had tears in my eyes as the girl behind the counter was going through my beloved stuff in the most nonchalant of manners, and I was thinking off all the occasions where I wore that sweater that I have had for like 10 years, the Benetton argyle top that I bought, kept for about 7 years and wore 3 times (did someone say argyle was coming back sometime soon?) and those shoes that I could only wear once because although they are a smashing pair, they are the most uncomfortable things I ever had to fit five toes into, I had visions of grabbing everything away from her claws, putting them back in the bag and running away from there as fast as I could.

Possibly feeling my anxiety to let go, she grabbed the whole pile before I could make a move and placed it away from my reach in a bigger pile of clothes from other strangers, turned to me and said "Would you like cash or store credit?"

"Let me look around." I said thinking that maybe I could find some brand name treasure for a decent price.

Half an hour later, I left the store with exactly $37.50 in my hands; talk about depreciation or in my case, depression.

Fashionable ski Gear? Can a dream come true?
Saturday and Sunday, I was up in Tahoe skiing and I have to tell you skiing is no opportunity for a fashion show. I have always believed and still have the opinion that skiing gear is probably the least fashionable kind of clothing I have ever had to endure for the love of a sport or anything else. They are bulky and ugly. I think there is a huge business opportunity there for some stylish, fashionable ski gear that will not burn the wallet.

Dream Girls is truly dreamy
I am not one who likes a musical movie. As far as I can remember, Chicago has been the only exception to that so far, that is, until I saw Dream Girls yesterday and Jennifer Hudson's voice literally brought tears to my eyes. What a voice!

Then at night I dreamt about this blouse that I had seen in Marie Claire magazine. I was out shopping and as I walk into this little boutique, I see it is the first thing on the rack on the hanger, get all excited and want to try it on. I have no idea what happened then because I opened my eyes for some reason and when I closed them back, the dream was gone.

Dream and Dare Straight to Plus

Today's dream outfit comes from Marc Jacobs. I have to be honest, I was never a big fan until my friend Idil kept buying his stuff on ebay and gave me my own private trunk show one day. I always thought that his designs were quite plain with no visible originality to make the hefty price tag worthy.

Then I saw a couple of his dresses on her, and I realized why he is so famous for his designs. The cuts that look so simple and straight, and sometimes, ironically too complicated to wear, literally transform on the body and make the garments look outrageously flattering.

It is a dilemma that reminds me of our shimmering dress which is scary to most plus size women at a first glance because of the heavy draping, but once you put it on, it becomes an entirely different story. I have seen it first hand here on models and the customers who actually rave about it tell the tale better than I do. It just goes to show, "Never talk big, until you try."

I learned my lesson.

The second reason why I became hooked on Marc is this object that has been taking up quite a lot of room in my dreams lately. This bag is my new obsession. I am waiting to see how long this one will take to fade away since I learned from my experience with the LV perforated speedy that it is only a matter of time until a highly distracted fashionista finds some other candy in the store to devour, at least in her dreams.

A woman who I think is just drop dead gorgeous, Jennifer Connelly is on the cover of Marie Claire magazine. There are a few shots of her in there where she is wearing an outfit very similar to this one by Marc Jacobs.

What do Diane and Yuliya have in common? The story of the wrap dress!

One of my favorite designers is Diane Von Furstenberg. She is the woman who put the term wrap dress in our fashion vocabulary and thanks to the amazingly flattering cut, wrap dresses have become of one of those trends that, well, never go out of trend. You will see them in solids, graphics, polka dots, cotton, jersey, taffeta etc., but they are always present on the hangers every season.

I am yet to see a body type that doesn't transform into something more, and almost always a positive enhancement, when it is adorned with a wrap dress. I am writing about this today inspired by three recent events.

One, I saw this book on Diane at Urban Outfitters out of all places on Sunday and I unabashedly blurted out to my friend Sara that "It would be the perfect Christmas present for me" as she replied "dido" Great minds do think alike.

Then, yesterday I got an email from a chain of stores I frequent in San Francisco called Georgiou announcing some of their new stuff and I saw this dress. (Toby, please excuse me, I just can't get enough of red) and needless to say, I am seriously tempted to go try it. The only thing holding me back is this BCBG dress I already own and adore, and although it is not a wrap dress, it is very similar in style.

What I like the most about wrap dresses is how versatile they are. You can fancitize a wrap dress with some sexy stilettos, a clutch, a knee length silk brocade jacket and some bling bling and strut around the room at that cocktail party, or talk business as you wear it with a denim jacket and some boots for a Friday at the office, or casualize it for a lazy brunch with the friends with a pair of jeans, some sassy sneakers, a cardigan and an oversized bag.

IGIGI Christmas party, new coat and news!

We had the IGIGI Christmas party over the weekend. I finally had a chance to wear this Missoni like BCBG dress that I had bought within its minute of arrival at Ambiance about seven months ago when I still used to work there.

It took me one minute to know that I wanted this dress, five minutes to try it on and showcase it to the others in the store and another five to make the transaction before I changed my mind. Then, it took me two months to find the perfect shoes that would go with it. I am still searching for the perfect clutch, but there are backups that do the job just fine in the mean time.

I was happy that I finally had an opportunity to wear it and laid everything out on my bed before I left the house to go visit a friend during the day on Saturday so that the whole ensemble would be ready when I got back and I would not get a chance to change my mind and go through my entire wardrobe in case there was something else that I may want to wear instead. You know, one of those big "What if, I wonder..." fashion dilemmas.

On Sunday, I was downtown with my friend Sara. I had checked this coat online several times, and as we were walking by Urban Outfitters and saw that they had a 30% off on outerwear, I dragged her inside and I tried it on.

and got it in black. It was a good deal for something I actually needed. It is very cute and comfortable.

Thanks to the world becoming an ever peaceful place to live, air travel has become a bit of a challenge for the fashionistas. Back in the careless and worry less days, I remember schlepping a hefty vanity case in my hands half way across the world happy and sound that I had access to my entire collection of beauty products. You know, in case I needed five different moisturizers as we flew over different climates, had to smell like Coco in one airport and Gio in the other, fix my hair, throw on an exfoliating mask and change nail polish as I waited for the next flight.

RIGHT!

I was reading this article about how we should pack now so that we are not departed with our beloved belongings by the whim of a security officer as we are anxiously trying to get on a plane in Vogue about this woman "who tried to explain to the baggage screener her $68 concealer's skin perfecting attributes as the officer aimed it at the bottom of a waste bin…."

And it reminded me of the last time I was in Frankfurt airport on my way to Istanbul desperately trying to explain in my broken yet utterly creative German to Frau Lufthansa that I had to take my Tweezerman set with me (did she know how much they cost?), and promising that I would never use them as weapons of mass destruction.

You have to give it to the Germans; they are more determined to keep possessions they like than the most tenacious of fashionistas. I landed in the motherland plus new German vocabulary minus one set of Tweezerman.

It is a rainy day today in San Francisco, and It was rather hard to get up and make it to work. I started this fascinating book last night. It is sort of a fiction story on the house of Gucci. I had a hard time putting it down and was up till late so it was rather a pain to get up today. Anyway, I had a very sweet note waiting for me among the numerous emails I got this morning which again made it all worth the while.

The fashion magazines are overflowing with them and I love them; it so happens that a long tunic is my favorite item to match with a pair of boot cut jeans or straight legged pants and stilettos or boots. Things we do for the love of fashion! Viviane and Victoriana, make-up and more tomorrow

As I have mentioned before, I rarely shop online. For me the fun in shopping is in going to the store, checking out the merchandise, looking at the labels, seeing who has come up with what at what price, the colors, the fabrics, you get the picture.

However, once in a while, I will break down and make an online purchase, especially if the designers involved are some of my favorites like Isaac Mizrahi and Behnaz Sarafpour.

I don't know much about the latter besides her designs, her native Iran which is next door to my native, Turkey, and the fact that the woman designs unbelievably refreshing and stylish suits and brings an entirely different perspective on this clothing type which I have always found rather boring and restricting.

Isaac is another story. I adore him! Both as a designer and as a human being.

As far as I know, he is the first designer who started the now-bigger-than ever trend of big designer teaming up with department stores of the masses, and in my opinion, one of the very few who has done it right.

Isaac has been able to offer his feminine, edgy yet elegant designs at no less than spectacular prices at Target. Plus, this duo has done a great job at marketing the designs and, more importantly, making them easily accessible and available. So what do we have in hand here?

Great design + great price + easy to find = Fashionista dreamland

I almost always have to try everything on before I make a purchase since almost everything needs to be tailored.

And I almost always try to avoid a store if I can't see the back wall from the front door which makes department stores a challenge I am not ready to tackle yet.

These two conflicting sides combined, I have been reluctant to check out Isaac's collection for the longest time. Well, I broke down a few weeks ago and actually ordered three items online at Target; one Isaac skirt, one Behnaz shirt and one Massimo top.

Thinking to myself how big of a pain it would be in my rear end if these things didn't fit right and scared to change my mind, I hit the confirm button and started checking the counter at my building starting that night.

I have had the items for the last three weeks now. I have to say it was %85 successful purchase.

The skirt is great! I think I ordered almost the right size. I ordered a 6 and I think I could have gotten away with a 4 which doesn't mean that I am smaller; it just means their sizes run big.

I thought and sort of hoped that it would not be pleated in the back as well, but the fact that the pleats start below the hips help not to over exaggerate my back. The fabric is a sturdy kind of denim so the tops fall over nicely. The color is really nice too; not too light and not too dark.

The only thing that was kind of weird about this skirt is that it sits right on my waist. And this is a rather unusual feeling because I have gotten so used to wearing everything low lately that if anything is above the belly button, I feel like I am wrapped up in a casket. The skirt looks really nice with a fitted sweater and knee high boots. If I didn't already have a collection of denim jackets at home, I would be seriously tempted to get the matching jacket as well.

I also got this shirt from Behnaz. And here is the interesting thing. Usually I wear a small on top and at least two sizes larger on the bottom. I don't know how it happened but somehow I ordered the shirt in a large. It is a tad big so I can breath. My God! It definitely runs small. I can comfortably say that I am glad I made this mistake. It is a beautiful, black shirt. Comfortable and I love the details on the body and the arms.

Last but not least is this top from Massimo, which I can wear underneath sweaters or those tops I have had forever but have too plunging of a neckline now that I am older and hopefully a tad wiser.

Overall, a great purchase if I say so myself. Am I on the track to becoming an online shopping junkie? God save the world!

"Who the hell is that?" The Holiday coat, Inverted Triangle outfits

Gone are the highlights
I have black hair NOW. I had made my appointment a week prior and had told my hair dresser that I have had highlights for the last 10 years, blond and red, and I have loved and cherished them, but felt like it was time to come to my own again like I am in some other aspects of my life.

Saturday afternoon, I am at the hair dresser.

"Are you sure about this he says. "
"Yes" I say. "Work away before I chicken out please."

An hour later. He removes the towel. I look in the mirror to the image facing me and I go "Who the hell is that?"

It is Monday now. After a few compliments and numerous looks in the mirror, I am finally getting used to it. I actually like it a lot. I will post pictures soon.

The Holiday
I saw a movie last night which I thought would be one of those cheesy, romantic, see-it now-and-forget-it-later movies, but Holiday turned out to be both entertaining and motivating in my own little way to not make the same mistakes in the matters of the heart.

There are some outfits in the movie that are just gorgeous. The coats in particular stole my heart.

Winners and Losers! This dress rocks and here is why!

It is catalog time again left and right. Those of you who read this blog regularly know that I am very intrigued by catalogs as a marketing tool from a business perspective.

I do believe that they prove effective when they are sent to the hands of the right target. We use them here at IGIGI as well, and they work. So I know that they are an efficient form of reaching out to the masses.

And as big a shopper as I am, I am YET to buy a single thing from a single catalog even if I like what I see. I use them for educational purposes to see what is new out there at BCBG, Antropologie, Bloomingdales, Sephora, Urban Outfitters etc.

I am an in-store shopper, so the best way catalogs work with me is to lure me to the shop which I think works better because once I am there I end up with more in my hands than I can afford, never more than I want or wish, which is the sad part of the equation, but I digress.

So, anyway, the least catalogs do is to provide me with entertainment at night when I am watching some minimum attention requiring soap like Fashion House and reading listings on Craigslist (I read every category almost every night), and chatting with friends at the same time. Thank God for multitasking!

Yesterday, I received three catalogs. I thought rating them here would be a great idea from a marketing stand point. Now, when I am doing my rating, I am assuming that there is some Marketing VP out there who tells his/her little soldiers that they need to start sending catalogs out and, preferably to potential new customers, and the little soldiers get to work to find new lists to buy so they bombard their mail boxes with I call "crap" mostly.

And I am also assuming that if you are going to buy a list, there must be some available out there that enables you to break things down so you reach the right people and have a worthwhile rate of return on your money. So with all these assumptions and everything else held equal (yes, I know my business jargon as well as I know my fashion jargon) here they are from worst to best from last night's contest at Mi Casa.

Finally, please nobody be offended, this is strictly a matter of taste, marketing and targeting!

I am one of the sloppiest people I know who simultaneously happens to be one the biggest neat freaks that I know off. How to live with myself?

If you love, cherish and protect your clothes and other fashion items with the same intensity of borderline insanity as I do, you also must be in constant search of stain remover methods, products, tip and tricks.

As I stained my most favorite off-white coat today with coffee on my way to the office, I thought it would be a nice idea to blog about this today. The Budgetfashionista's book has a very informative chart on removing stains. I picked three that I seem to run into all the time. So here I quote:

Coffee Stain:
Remedy: hand soap.
Instruction: Apply and then rinse with cold water.

Lipstick, make up stain:
Remedy: cheap aerosol hair spray
Instruction: Spray on stain, let sit for a few moments, then rinse with cold water.

Red wine stain:
Remedy: club soda, mild detergent, and cold water
Instruction: Apply detergent, then rinse with cold water.

Recently, thanks to an ex who was "nice" to point out that the drop-dead-gorgeous girl whose modeling shots featuring Michael Stars are pretty much in every single fashion magazine out there, my attention has been drawn to their new line of cashmere sweaters.

I have to admit I really like these shots. I wish that I could find them online to paste here, but I could not. The best I can do is to direct you the company's website where they have a page dedicated to the ads.

I am obsessed with these ads to the point that I find myself turning the pages frantically to see if there is a Michael Stars ad with this chick in it showcasing the sweaters.

Soon, I will go check them out and let you know if they are as good as their casual cotton wear line.

The story of a dress
Yesterday, I got an email from a friend of mine on Myspace who has been a supporter of my mission here since I started blogging. We are often asked questions about modeling, and they mostly concentrate on pictures. After all, a picture speaks a thousand words. And two months into our National Model Search, we can confidently tell you this; we could write book. Ladies, beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. You are all beautiful in our eyes just the way you are. However, in business, rules matter. Based on popular demand from the model search entrants, we felt obliged to come up with a list of, Do's and Don'ts when you submit your pictures. So here we go!

Catherine Schuller a plus size fashions expert and an authority in the industry whom we work very closely with here at IGIGI has a fantastic book out on the subject called the Ultimate Plus-Size Modeling Guide.

I strongly recommend this book to all aspiring models. Here are a few suggestions as to How you should approach starting a modeling career from Catherine's book.

How much of an initial investment can you afford? Pictures, comps, clothing, training, classes, appearance upkeep requires capital.

How much can you schedule your life on a regular basis? You need to be available most of the time for go-sees or bookings and may need to make last minute arrangements.

How tolerant can you be? There is a certain rudeness to the business. At first, no one seems to welcome you with open arms as you had anticipated. In fact they dare you to belong.

How can you be regarding your location? Be where the work is happening or you won't be a player. It is not always about relocating to major cities such as Los Angeles or New York but there has to be a market for plus sizes in your area.

How Plus are you? There are specific requirements of height, weight, size and they are well-defined.

Her name is Allegra Hicks, and she puts what I dream in my head into cut, color and pattern. I saw one of her dresses in December's In Style, and it just took my breath away.

Changing Times

I think men are finally coming back to their senses. I am in a constant battle with some of my guy friends who idolize figures such as Kate Moss. Even as a size 6, I get seriously self-conscious, disturbed and tired of them talking about how hot some of these women look.

If I hear one more person who thinks a size 2 is anything more than borderline anorexic, I am going to start giving a piece of my mind, and it will be really hard to shut me up from there on until I receive a Grammy or something for the best broken record of all times.

Hopefully, things are changing. There is at least one poll out there which claims so! Here is an interesting article from the wire today.

The Turkish Triangle, Black Monday at IGIGI, Velvet for the holidays

Thanksgiving, Turkey and the Turkish Triangle.

Sometimes I feel like I make brief visits to the twilight zone, and for some reason they usually happen around the time of a holiday. You know those times when weird things of a certain theme happen, and they happen one after the other and you have no explanation as to why, and nothing you can do, except sit back and watch the show?

Three weeks ago. I am struggling through yet another hot and hard yoga class. As I am watching the cute guy next to me wearing a shirt that says Catherine Jane and wondering why a straight-looking, black guy is wearing a t-shirt that has one of my favorite women's clothing boutiques' name on it, and simultaneously cursing the sandwich I ate at lunch and the abundance of salt I sprinkled on it, the teacher calls out my name and says something, and he turns and looks at me like he knows me.

One hour and a half later, I walk out of the class ready to collapse and gulp down endless amounts of water; he comes and says "Are you Turkish?"

In my total of 14 years in this country, I have been asked this question only once before.

Here I enter the zone.

"Yes, how did you know?" I say. "Oh, I had a Turkish girlfriend." he says.

Three weeks later. I am at Thanksgiving dinner thrown by some of my good Irish friends whom I met through my ex Irish boyfriend; the only boyfriend I have managed to be able to keep friends with and the only boyfriend whose friends I still like and see on a regular basis. He is there as well as a couple of really cute guys I have never met before. We get seated around the dinner table, and I end up between the ex and a new guy.

As we are talking and getting to know each other, he asks me where I am from and once he finds out the answer, he goes "Oh, I had a Turkish girlfriend for two years." As I see some of my girlfriends around us start giggling at our conversation, I turn to him and the ex, and I say "Here, you guys have a lot to talk about."

One day later, I come home from a date with a friend of mine, which included having a bigger dinner than I can chew and falling asleep through a movie, and get online. There is the other main character of one of my rather short-lived romances online, and we start chatting. As we are inquiring about each other's dating life, he says to me "By the way, I was out twice with this Turkish Stanley recently, and starts bitching about her."

"You too?" I think to myself, "What a coincidence."

If I meet one more guy who tells me this, it may actually be time for me to start learning Portuguese and get another passport.

I am starting with an article today on Holiday must-haves for your special occasions. There is nothing like a garment in structured velvet for the holidays. Here are some tips while your are shopping:

Softness: Good velvet is soft and lush. If the material is of poor quality, it won't fit you properly.

Details: Sequins, embroidery, ribbons, ruching, cinched waist add interesting detail and make an otherwise ordinary outfit dazzle.

Lining: Silky lining always work better than canvas or cotton lining and allows for a better, smoother fit.

Too much Salt, Do you know your make up? These IGIGI pants are hot she says! These are new!

OK the weekend was fun. Remember the wine guy from my posting on November 9th? He came through.

What do you know? There are still some cute, nicely dressed and mannered, single men left on the face of the planet who know how to treat a woman.

He made plans to go out for Saturday night, told me he would come and pick me up and that the place we would go to would be a surprise. Good signs, nice start, I told myself and started thinking about what I would wear, naturally!

We went to a new restaurant called Salt House in downtown San Francisco. Now, as much as I love salt and pretty much sprinkle it on everything, the food at this place was like soaked in salt. Too much!

More unfortunate for my date who actually turned out to not like salt, we were both equally disappointed with the food, but the conversation was great so we had a nice time anyway.

As we were wondering why they named the restaurant the Salt House, I looked at the table top and only saw a pepper shaker, looked up at him, and said "I think I know why. Look at the table, what is missing?"

Saturday night was fun and interesting, but the day was definitely smashing.

Last week, I had a call from my friend Drew who works as the counter manager at Armani Cosmetics at Bloomingdales informing me that Armani was having make up sessions and that their make up artist would be there to supervise the sessions, and she was wondering if I would be interested in an appointment.

"INTERESTED?" I yelled. "Hell yeah!" put me and my make up junkie friend Yuko down!

It was a blast. Tim, who turned out to be a really nice, handsome and down-to-earth guy, as well as a make up wizard, is featured in December's Elle magazine. For reasons unbeknownst to me, he paid special attention to us, and practically made us up entirely himself, and we had a nice chat.

And of course, I could not resist asking him if he would be so nice to contribute an article to a certain site that I manage.

So, keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned to me because it may be sooner than later that Armani Celebrity Face Designer may share his make up tricks with the IGIGI community.

Friday How Tos
I have been getting a ton of questions regarding plus size modeling through Myspace, my other blog at thefashionistique and the Lifestyle website.

As some of you know, we do have year long National Model Search we have launched in October, 06 in partnership with Model Service Agency, LLP and a section called Eye on Modeling at our Lifestyle where models contribute articles, interviews and such.

The questions I have been getting have motivated and pushed me to look into this more carefully and do some research to get back to you guys.

First of, please get neither upset nor discouraged if I don't get back to you with long, detailed emails with lots of references in them as I am in no form or shape an expert in this field with a long list of connections.

I try to answer the questions as best as I can within my knowledge, and I have to admit my knowledge on this particular subject is not as extensive as in some others.There are somethings I could qualify as an expert for such as identifying a fake Louis Vuitton from a mile away or a certain designer's collection from a line up of usual and similar suspects, but I am nowhere even remotely close to telling you whether you are model material or not. For me it would be opinion, unless you specifically ask me if you are IGIGI material, and my opinion is an opinion which only matters to me and to people who think like me so it should not be taken as a fact contributing to your modeling carer. If you agree that a certain friend who used to be married to a certain hunk who played in one of my favorite movies "The Legends of the Fall" looks more like the cartoon Ms.Piggy than the hot chick she is publicized to be, You know what I mean!

But I have, however, figured out a way to let you figure it out for yourself, at least, in the beginning when you are standing in front of the mirror at home and wondering. Here is a small start.

One heart touching comment, Lace everywhere and at IGIGI

It is always nice to hear, read, witness, you name it, that what you spend majority of your days doing is making a difference in people's lives.

God knows I love fashion more than most things in life. Most days it can compete with, and very well take over cheesecake, French fries and Sting. Those who know me well can only understand the depth of what I am talking about right now.

I am extremely biased like that. However, at the risk of sounding like a nun, I do often think that it is purely vane, unimportant in the larger scheme of things in the world, and self-serving at best.

However, there is a side of fashion I have come to appreciate more and more, especially since I started working at IGIGI. It is this so-called "niche market" (LOL, it is the fastest growing segment according to statistics) that I work in which has made me realize it.

Vanity makes an entrance. For some, fashion is just another top in extra small or some other straight size, yet another pair of pants in that other color, or a dress you randomly buy at a sale which you wear to that New Year's Eve party and rediscover in a dark corner of your closet a year later with a dumb look on your face as if it is the first time you are encountering it.

And it exists. And for some fashion is a necessity, it is a panic attack as that important event is fast approaching and you have nothing to wear, it is an entire day of going from store to store and coming back home empty handed and depressed because although you have the finances, you can't find anything that will fit right, it is an unfulfilled dream of fitting into a drop dead gorgeous dress and making an unforgettable entrance at that party.

I know these feelings from experience first hand which is exactly why it makes me happy to be part of something that is making a difference and actually fulfilling a need now.

It balances out the vanity which I can so totally get succumbed into with the real side which I am working to promote. And it especially puts a smile on my face and makes me feel good about what I do when I read a customer comment like this one below.

I am quoting it anonymously since I haven't asked for permission to state the name attached to it, but I am eager to share with you guys so here it is:

"Please realize, most of us large size "fatties" have very little experience on how to dress appropriately. We did the best we could- with what we had... now we have YOU!"

Who wants to look like this? Men, men, men, New at IGIGI

I don't wish this on neither myself nor anybody else!
So many times in my life, I have had to deal with weight issues. Having been born into a family with plump parents and relatives on both sides of my family, I have been blessed with genes that are programmed to dream, devour and delight in food for the majority of my life span.

Eating and enjoying food lavishly has been a family tradition ever since I was a kid. Until I moved to the U.S. when I was sixteen, I had breakfast and dinner every single day with my family which consisted of two to four courses accompanied with bread and other Mediterranean assortments.

Even today when I get back for vacations, our three daily meal sessions are the only times we really get together and share whatever the moment brings. My friends are always amazed at the emphasis on food at my house and the way it brings the whole family together, dropping whatever we are doing at the moment to go and eat.

This borderline obsession with food and lack of any physical activity to balance it out, at least in older age, manifested itself in an assortment of medical conditions in my family leading to the rise of a small pharmacy next to the kitchen.

An eternal believer in the law of inertia especially when at rest, this was one of the biggest rude awakenings in my life as I had always hated moving and was the biggest couch potato that I knew of. I didn't want to let go of food. Yet, I realized that I had to perform some sort of physical activity if I didn't want to start popping a collection of pills a day to stay alive. It took me about ten years to make myself like exercise, find some form of it that I can stick with, and I still maintain a love and hate relationship with it, more on the love side lately since I discovered it really helps me keep sane as well as balance out the apple syrup I like to enjoy on the weekends.

Sometimes the line becomes blurry. My fear of dealing with diseases, my desire to look good and my envy of some who can fit into certain things by certain designers get the best of me and have me overdo it and depress myself thinking about it. Then I get a wake up call from the powers above in some form or shape which makes me realize that life is too god damn short and I should just try to make the best of what I have and accept myself the way I am because that is the only way I will ever feel comfortable in the skin that I was born in.

This week, the call came in the form of an email from a friend who sent me the pictures below. Granted I have never "managed" to look like this, and thank my genes and God for that, they sure provided the fastest route back to reality.

San Francisco! Is the world coming to an end?
So I had a first last night. My friend Jen called a little before I was about to leave work and she was like "Are you still in the States?"

Thinking to myself for a second that finally someone must have taken all my jib jab about my ever growing homesickness and having had it here, and how I wake in the middle of the night sometimes looking for my passport, but thank God for various reasons that I can't find it because I have that habit of hiding things so well that I can't remember where I put them, I said "I am here."

I went to pick her up, and we went to Houstons upon her request. We sat at the bar to wait for a table. Five minutes later, I saw this guy checking her out like she was a Picasso painting. And as I opened my mouth to tell her, another guy appeared right next to me with a bottle of opened wine with half the juice in it, and offered it to us.

"That is a first" I said. "I have never been offered an opened bottle of wine before."

"Oh, we were just celebrating the elections, and we have to leave now and I saw that you ladies were having red wine, so I thought I would ask to leave it with you...............................................by the way what is your name?"

Damn, that must be the longest pick up line I have ever heard! But hell, thanks to German, the guy can pronounce my name the first letter of which is actually a vowel, an O with two dots on top, that exists only in German and Turkish as far as I know, and he happens to speak German. And he is cute, nicely dressed with manners, minus a ring. We just maybe onto something here I think to myself. I may like this Houston's place after all.

Ten minutes later he is memorizing my phone number. He doesn't have his cell on, we can't find a pen, and I refuse to make the first call although he had already handed out a business card. So he memorizes my number and recites it a few times.

As he says goodbye and walks away, Jen and I look at each other and burst out "If he calls, he is a keeper!"

Stella is a hot number we have at IGIGI. I saw an ABS by Allen Schwartz lace mini dress o in the Nordstrom catalog the other day, which is very similar to Stella. I thought that it would be fun to suggest some casual and fancy outfits with them.

One of my favorite combinations is a dress over jeans for a funky look paired with a cardigan, a jacket or a shrug and heels, naturally!

I suggest a sraight, narrow, boot-cut pair of jeans to go with these. The items below would look really nice over the dresses for a casual look of the season. Did someone hear me say plaid?

Wear the dresses with a nice shawl or a fancier coat for a date, a cocktail party, a graduation ceremony, you name it!

Let's not forget the shoes! There is nothing like a pair of red pumps to bring some color and add some fun to an otherwise all black outfit. These Enzo patent pumps would work with both a casual and a fancy look.

a dream come true, Who are these beauties?

I think I broke a new driving record last night, one that is even too much for someone who drives like a female version of Schumacher like me. From downtown Palo Alto, Ca to the Bill Graham Auditorium in San Francisco, I made it in exactly 34 minutes, parked and ready to do some Domino Dancing.

I have not driven this fast for a long time. Granted, I used to be a much more aggressive driver in the past--two carpool lane tickets from my days commuting to San Jose, one handicapped zone (received within the five minutes I was dropping videos off) and two red light violation tickets (excellent picture caught by the camera though if I say so myself) and my car insurance bill which takes up a significant portion of my monthly disposable income which otherwise would strictly be dedicated to fashions of endearment--I believe are the biggest manifestations to that.

I am much better these days. Haven't gotten a ticket in the last year and a half, and if I did get one last night, I doubt that I would care much. I got to see one of my ultimate favorite bands in the world, live in San Francisco.

That is worth so much more than lamenting a bloody ticket!

I picked up my ticket which my friend had left at will call for me, and made my way to my seat. You should have seen the amazement on his face when I tapped him on the shoulder and said "hi."

He was like "Were you really in Palo Alto?" I wasn't expecting you for another hour; thank God they are having a late start."

It was a blast! My favorite songs one after the other. You know what I mean if you are a happy and willing product of the 80s and if a certain couple of pet shop boys are among the most played artist in your ipod.
